Tychem® 6000 F FaceSeal coverall protects pharmaceutical industry personnel working with hazardous substances

Personnel working in chemical and biotechnological active substance production areas on the site of a well-known pharmaceuticals company in the Rhine-Main region work with a huge range of acids, alkalies and other hazardous substances. Tychem® 6000 F FaceSeal from DuPont Personal Protection, introduced onto the market in 2017, provides them with the specific protection that working under such potentially hazardous conditions demands. In late 2017, the company decided to use this coverall after DuPont had thoroughly explained the possible applications of chemical protection garments, provided all relevant data and then promptly supplied samples for extensive wear testing. A video, which was recently shot on site in close collaboration with DuPont, shows the correct donning and doffing procedure for the suit. Occupational safety staff there regularly use the video to train hundreds of colleagues to avoid contamination by hazardous substances and the consequent risks to health.

New video explains proper donning and doffing procedure

Tychem® 6000 F FaceSeal meets a comprehensive range of requirements which the customer had specified as a condition for use. For example, wearer comfort is guaranteed because the garment is made of a lightweight material and weighs less than 500 grams. Moreover, being classified as a type 3-B chemical protective garment, it provides the necessary barrier action against liquid chemicals and it has an antistatic finish on the inside. The front of the coverall, which is subject to the highest exposure to hazardous substances, offers protection that is uncompromised because the suit has a horizontal back opening and the chemical resistant gloves are seamlessly attached. As well as incorporating all the necessary protective measures, Tychem® 6000 F FaceSeal is easy to don and doff because it eliminates the need for taping around the hands and face – a practice which is unpopular and often carried out inadequately. Instead, a soft rubber seal around the face opening makes it easy to pull the hood on over a mask.

Tychem® 6000 F FaceSeal from DuPont Personal Protection is easy to don and doff because it does not require taping, which is unpopular and thus often carried out inadequately, around either the hands or the face, while the softness of the rubber seal around the face opening makes it easy to pull on over the mask.

Tychem® 6000 F FaceSeal sees service in combination with a respirator mask wherever users need to be protected from organic and highly concentrated inorganic chemicals. In addition, thanks to the antistatic finish on the inside and the integral conductive strips in the socks in conjunction with dissipative protective boots, it is also suitable for explosion hazard areas.

Typical applications for this customer include pump transfer of hazardous substances from an articulated truck into storage tanks, regular maintenance work and possibly even plant incidents if, for example, pipework conveying hazardous substances has to be opened.

In line with current rules applicable under the German Statutory Accident Insurance (DGUV) scheme and specific instructions for the use of category III PPE, the customer carries out regular in-house training courses in which correct donning and doffing of the coverall, the respirator mask, safety gloves and dissipative chemical protective boots is explained and practiced. The new step-by-step video makes the correct donning and doffing procedures easy to remember and so significantly assists in avoiding accidents due to inadequate knowledge and skill. According to the safety specialists in charge, it also educates line managers and those who specify coveralls for use about how important correct use of such garments is by illustrating how much time is involved, not only for the wearer but also for a second person providing assistance. So, it is clear that this training pays off in many ways.
